Great service! John is very helpful and a very knowledgeable arborist. We had to submit an arborist letter to the city for the removal of a very large tree in our front yard so we contacted John. John so kindly came within a day or so of contacting him and assessed the tree. He provided us with an outstanding professional written letter that was very detailed and precise assessment of the tree. I would absolutely recommend his services.

background: I wanted an ISA certified specialist to assess my oak tree's health (private residence). It has been having carpenter ants in the bark for months now and, though they don't bother me, I was worried it could be a sign of a problem. (They don't eat a healthy tree, they take advantage of air pockets formed in decaying wood.) With that said, a pesticide company isn't who to call, nor did I want a tree-trimming company who just has self-interest in telling you your tree should be cut down. Turns out searching for "arborists near me" only gives you tree trimmers. If you're in my shoes, you can search for an ISA certified specialist near you on treesaregood.org, which is how I found John Cross. ISA's mindset is to save and preserve trees when possible rather than cut them down.

I have just set up an appointment with John Cross. Although i have not yet had his service (scheduled for a future day) this review serves as my recommendation based on a few things so far:

A. The number listed is his cell, so you get to speak with him directly and not some front desk that's going to have you go through a menu and put you on hold. Gotta love small businesses.

B. Answering with a simple hello like you called a friend not a business, John was friendly, down to earth, and enthusiastic. Within a very brief and objective conversation, I think ive finally found the right person for what I need.

C. John sounded knowledgeable and explained that he's a consultant, not a tree trimmer, although he can connect me to good trimmers later if my tree needs it.

D. John is local (sunrise), available, and easy to schedule with. Picking a date was easy as there was no back and forth on trying to have our schedules line up. Also: John said he'd come out and inspect my tree no charge, which was an exciting bonus as I've heard there's usually a fee for something like this!

E. There weren't many other reviews here at the time, but the ones that had something to say all said only good things about him and gave him a 5 star rating. I'll update here if I feel otherwise, but at this point in the process, I'm confident I'll be just as happy with his service as past reviewers were.

*TLDR (Summary): I need a large tree in my yard inspected and found John Cross thru an ISA directory. Still haven't had the service yet but so far he seems knowledgeable, friendly, easy to work with, professional, and not biased.
I will update after service.

Update days later: John let me know he was coming by as scheduled, and sent me a text when he was on the way. He looked at my tree and was very knowledgeable, pointing out its good signs, and advising me of bad signs to look out for, which my tree didn't show. He listened and understood my needs. Because he came at no charge, I was waiting for the sales pitch or marketing to be tossed at me in the end, but after answering all my questions, he shook my hand to say bye. I was confused, and asked him about it. He said he is a horticulture advisor/consultant and he does the assessments (like mine) on the side mainly to keep active... (In other words, For his own good, for our own good, and for the good of the land. That's it, he asks for nothing in return. ?).

John, you are amazing and your service visit went beyond tree advice. Thank you!

He helped us navigate a tense situation with the city when one of our large oak trees was dropping large branches due to disease and threatening both life and property. Once we had his letter in hand, the city backed down and we were able to remove the severely diseased tree immediately, so that it could no longer threaten our home or anyone in it. Would highly recommend his services to anyone in a similar situation!
