​Building Inspection Division - Thornton, Colorado

I built a room addition in Thornton approved 100% by the city engineer
Customer wanted matching shingles
Approved already by the building dept.
The inspector refused to sign off because even though approved by his boss they weren't dimensional.
I calmly explained it was pre approved. They wanted a matching roof it was pre approved.
He wasn't having it.
I went over his head and the head engineer signed off.

On final inspection he tried to pick apart everything and we were prepared.
Passed flawlessly except for the steps were 1/4" off level..
The home owner told him on the spot we have decided to not have steps on the building.
Come back tomorrow and reinspect.
The newbie agreed
Overnight the homeowner removed the steps and closed the wall.
The inspector was upset the next day.
But passed the project.
I drove buy later the door was in and the steps were back.
The home owner said I will not tear out my patio over a 1/4" and didnt.

We are a general contractor based out of Longmont and we had the absolute best experience in working with the Thornton Building Department. We neglected to include electrical plans in with a permit submittal (completely our fault) and we were scrambling to rectify the situation. April answered the phone (a live person?!?!) and immediately jumped into action to get us squared away with several documents. Our error could have resulted in lost hours for our employees and delaying the project. Instead, the project stayed on track and we're elated to have a local jurisdiction to work with that is as prompt and savvy as Thornton. Thanks April!!!

On March 24th our production manager met with Sr. Bldg. Inspector Wendell Heyen for a deck inspection and our PM immediately called me after the inspection to write this review on his behalf and with our hopes that Wendell's manager Jason O'Shea will see it as well.

Our PM stated that he has attended A LOT of permit inspections over the span of 10+ years and by far this was the best, most pleasant and seamless inspection he has EVER had. He stated with excitement that Wendell was professional, personable, attentive and accommodating, which nowadays seems to be rare behavior especially within this industry. Wendell went above and beyond by directly answering the homeowners questions about the inspection which in turn supported our work by ensuring what we built was done correctly and assuring the homeowners confidence all at the same time! Thank you so much for your help Wendell and we hope you stay around for many years to come as you are definitely in the right position. Most of all thank you for the kind way of dealing with us and our customer too!
